Discover more about Story Bridge

Brisbane's Story Bridge is more than just a river crossing; it's a symbol of the city's history and engineering prowess. Built between 1935 and 1940, during the Great Depression, the bridge provided much-needed employment and stands as a testament to Australian ingenuity. The bridge was named after John Douglas Story, a dedicated public servant who championed its construction. The Story Bridge is the largest of its kind designed and built in Australia. It carries State Route 15 and is a vital transport link. While pedestrians and cyclists could previously use paths on the bridge's outer edges, they are currently closed for restoration. Today, the Story Bridge is known for its LED lighting displays and the Brisbane bridge climb. Beneath the bridge on the Central Business District side is Howard Smith Wharves, a historic shipyard-turned-precinct. The old warehouses have been transformed into a craft beer hall and conference spaces, and there are newly built bars, cafes and restaurants along with open parkland.
