Kurranji Bubu Nature Refuge: A Daintree Rainforest Sanctuary

Kurranji Bubu Nature Refuge is a remarkable testament to rainforest restoration, located at 2255 Cape Tribulation Rd, Diwan, QLD. This 28-hectare property, nestled in the Cooper Creek Precinct and bordered by the Daintree National Park, was once a degraded oil palm plantation. Purchased by Rainforest Rescue in 2010, it underwent a decade of painstaking restoration, transforming into a thriving ecosystem. In May 2021, Kurranji Bubu was granted Nature Refuge status, ensuring its permanent protection in collaboration with the Queensland State Government. The name, meaning 'Cassowary Land' in the local Yalanji language, reflects its importance as critical habitat for the endangered Southern Cassowary, as well as other rare species like the Pygmy possum and Bennett's tree kangaroo. Over 40,000 trees were planted, and natural regeneration occurred as weeds were removed. Visitors can explore well-maintained paths, perfect for nature walks, birdwatching, and photography.
