Discover more about Main Range National Park

Main Range National Park, located 85 kilometers southwest of Brisbane, is a captivating mountain range and national park in Queensland, Australia. Predominantly situated in the Southern Downs Region, it forms the western part of the Scenic Rim, a semicircle of mountains recognized as a World Heritage Site. The park's dramatic landscape is a result of ancient volcanic activity that occurred approximately 25 to 22 million years ago. The Main Range shield volcano erupted through numerous basalt dykes, creating the horizontal lava flows that now form the bulk of the Main Range, Little Liverpool Range, and Mistake Range. Over millions of years, erosion has sculpted the peaks and cliff lines, exposing plugs and dykes across the Fassifern Valley. Main Range National Park boasts a rich history, with evidence suggesting that Indigenous Australians used Spicers Gap as a traditional pathway between the inland and the coast. In 1828, Allan Cunningham explored Cunninghams Gap, and in 1847, Henry Alphen discovered Spicers Gap. These gaps played a significant role in the development of the region, with Spicers Gap Road serving as a vital route for transporting supplies to and from the Darling Downs. The park's diverse ecosystems provide habitat for a wide array of flora and fauna. Sub-tropical rainforest and dry sclerophyll forest dominate the landscape, supporting threatened species such as the eastern bristlebird, Coxen's fig parrot, and the black-breasted buttonquail. Visitors can explore the park's natural beauty through numerous walking tracks, ranging from easy strolls to challenging hikes. Popular trails include the Queen Mary Falls Circuit, Bare Rock Track, and Mount Mitchell Trail. Camping areas are available at Spicers Gap and Goomburra, offering facilities such as composting toilets and tap-water. Remote area bush camping is also permitted, providing a more secluded experience.
