Discover more about Darwin Aviation Museum

The Darwin Aviation Museum, located in Winnellie, is a must-visit for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike. It offers a comprehensive look into the Territory's significant role in both civil and military aviation, from the early pioneers to the jet age. The museum's origins trace back to 1976 when a group of enthusiasts sought to preserve aviation relics after Cyclone Tracy. This mission expanded to include documenting WWII aircraft crash sites and preserving relics related to Darwin's defense during the war. The museum first opened to the public in 1988. The collection features 19 aircraft and 21 engines. The star attraction is the massive Boeing B-52G Stratofortress bomber, on permanent loan from the United States Air Force and one of only three on public display outside the US. Other notable aircraft include a replica Spitfire, a B-25 Mitchell Bomber, Mirage and Sabre jets, and the Wessex helicopter that assisted in the Cyclone Tracy cleanup. Exhibits also delve into the bombing of Darwin in 1942, displaying the only known color footage of the first air raid. Visitors can explore the stories of pioneering aviators like Amy Johnson, the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia. Relics on display include wreckage from a Japanese Zero fighter shot down during the 1942 air raids. Allow at least 90 minutes to fully appreciate the museum. Guided tours are available, and aviation videos are screened continuously. The museum also features an extensive souvenir shop.
