Car
If you're traveling by car from Eastern Victoria, start by getting onto the Monash Freeway (M1) towards Melbourne. Continue on the M1 for approximately 70 km. As you approach the city, follow the signs for the West Gate Freeway (M1) leading into the city center. Take the exit toward King Street and continue straight onto King Street. Turn right onto La Trobe Street and then take a left onto Russell Street. The Old Melbourne Gaol will be on your left at 377 Russell St. There is street parking available, but be aware that parking fees apply, typically around AUD 3-5 per hour.
Public Transportation
To reach Old Melbourne Gaol using public transportation, start by taking a train from any station in Eastern Victoria to Southern Cross Station in Melbourne. From Southern Cross Station, exit onto Spencer Street and catch tram number 35 (City Circle Tram) or tram number 86 towards Waterfront City Docklands. Get off at the stop for the Melbourne Central Station. From there, it's a short 10-minute walk: exit the station and head north along La Trobe Street, then turn left onto Russell Street. The Gaol will be on your left at 377 Russell St. Note that public transportation fares vary, but a standard adult fare is approximately AUD 4-6 depending on the time of travel.
