Discover more about Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum (Geocentre)

The Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum, also known as the GeoCentre, stands as a testament to Broken Hill's extensive mineral heritage. Housed in a beautifully restored 1892 Bond Store, the museum itself is a piece of history, initially used to hold goods until duties were paid. Later, it served as a wine and spirits warehouse for Seppelt and Sons until 1973. Inside, visitors can explore a world-class collection of over 2,000 mineral, gem, and crystal specimens. A highlight is the 42kg silver nugget, a stunning example of nearly pure native silver found in a fault cavity at the nearby Junction Mine. Another impressive exhibit is the Silver Tree, crafted from over 8 kilograms of pure silver by Adelaide jeweller Henry Steiner and once owned by Charles Rasp, the prospector who discovered the original 'broken hill'. The museum delves into the geological history of Broken Hill and the formation of the Line of Lode, the massive ore deposit that shaped the city's fortune. Interactive displays and audio-visual presentations explain the science of crystals and the processes that created the region's unique geology. The museum also highlights the social history of the town, offering a comprehensive understanding of Broken Hill's past.
