Twelve Apostles Viewpoint: Coastal Majesty

Witness the iconic limestone stacks of the Twelve Apostles along the Great Ocean Road, a breathtaking spectacle of nature's artistry.

4.8

The Twelve Apostles Viewpoint is a must-see destination along Australia's famed Great Ocean Road, offering panoramic views of the rugged coastline and the iconic limestone stacks known as the Twelve Apostles. Located within Port Campbell National Park, about a 4.5-hour drive from Melbourne, the viewpoint provides easy access to witness the natural beauty of this world-renowned attraction. Formed over millions of years by the relentless erosion of the Southern Ocean, the limestone cliffs have gradually receded, leaving behind these towering rock formations. Originally part of the mainland, the stacks now stand as isolated pillars, a testament to the power of nature. Although named the Twelve Apostles, there have never been twelve stacks; erosion has reduced the number to seven. Six are visible from the main viewing platform, with the seventh located a short distance away. The viewpoint offers several accessible viewing platforms connected by sealed paths, making it easy for visitors of all abilities to enjoy the scenery. The Saddle Lookout, completed in recent years, provides even wider paths and new perspectives of the coastline. The best time to visit is at sunrise or sunset when the golden light illuminates the stacks, creating a truly memorable experience. While at the Twelve Apostles, consider descending the Gibson Steps to experience the stacks from sea level. A short drive or walk from the main viewpoint, the Gibson Steps lead to a stunning beach where you can appreciate the scale of these natural wonders.
