Tasmanian War Memorial: A Waterfront Tribute

The Tasmanian War Memorial, also known as the Hobart Cenotaph, stands as the main commemorative military monument for the state. Situated in a prominent position at 4 Franklin Wharf on Hobart's waterfront, the memorial offers stunning views of the River Derwent, kunanyi/Mount Wellington, and the city. It serves as a place of remembrance and reflection, honoring the courage and commitment of Tasmanians in various conflicts. The memorial's design is an Art Deco reinterpretation of a traditional Egyptian obelisk. Designed by Hobart architects Hutchinson and Walker, it won a public competition in 1923. The structure was unveiled on December 13, 1925, replacing a previous wooden structure. The obelisk stands 23 meters (75 feet) tall, constructed of grey granite on a bluestone base. The Cenotaph was originally erected to commemorate Tasmanian war dead from World War I, but has since been updated to include those who served in subsequent conflicts. Inscriptions on the monument include "Lest We Forget" and the dates of various wars and peacekeeping operations. While the Cenotaph itself does not bear individual names, a casket containing the names of 522 Tasmanians who died in World War I is housed within its base. The memorial is the focal point for Anzac Day ceremonies in Hobart, with services held at dawn and mid-morning. The Soldiers Memorial Avenue, with its rows of trees, leads to the Cenotaph, further enhancing the site's commemorative atmosphere.
