Discover more about Wollongong Botanic Garden

Wollongong Botanic Garden, nestled at the base of Mount Keira in Keiraville, NSW, offers a peaceful escape into nature. Established in 1964 and opened in 1971, the garden spans 27 hectares and showcases a diverse collection of native and exotic plants. The garden is divided into themed areas, including a rose garden, herb garden, woodland garden, and azalea bank. Several rainforest areas, such as the Illawarra rainforest, subtropical rainforest, dry rainforest, and exotic rainforest, provide visitors with an immersive experience. A creek meanders through the garden, flowing into a small lake inhabited by ducks and geese. One of the iconic features is the Japanese-style wooden bridge that crosses the creek. The Wollongong Botanic Garden has a rich history. Before European settlement, the Dharawal people occupied the land for thousands of years. In the 1800s, the land was used for farming before the Hoskins family purchased it in 1929. They built Gleniffer Brae, which still stands within the garden today. In the 1950s, the Hoskins dedicated a large part of their land to Wollongong City Council to create a Botanic Garden. Today, the garden plays a vital role in conserving local plants and providing a space for people to connect with nature. It also manages three other natural areas: Mount Keira Summit Park, Puckeys Estate Nature Reserve, and Korrongulla Wetlands. The garden hosts various events and activities, including guided tours, garden workshops, and the Sunset Cinema.
