History and Estate

Medhurst Wines embodies the vision of Ross and Robyn Wilson, who selected this Yarra Valley site for its north-facing slopes, excellent drainage, and cool microclimate. Planted in 2000 with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Sauvignon Blanc, the 15-hectare estate vineyard produces low-yielding grapes ideal for elegant wines. The first vintage in 2003 marked the beginning of small-batch production focused on site-specific character. The winery, embedded into the hillside, minimizes environmental impact with features like a translucent wall and underground barrel storage. Recent renovations by Folk Architects added natural timber and curved glass, blending modern design with rustic charm.

Vineyards and Winemaking

Elevated 140-210 meters above sea level, the vineyard benefits from cool nights, mild days, and clay-loam soils that promote slow ripening and vibrant acidity. Sustainable practices include minimal irrigation, careful canopy management, and hand-picking during February to April harvests. Winemaking emphasizes minimal intervention: French oak ageing with older barrels preserves purity, while lees stirring adds complexity to whites like Chardonnay. Standouts include Estate Chardonnay with citrus and minerality, silky Pinot Noir with cherry and spice, bold Cabernet Sauvignon with blackcurrant, and savoury Shiraz. Limited Reserve releases from top vintages earn critical acclaim.

Cellar Door Experience

Perched on the hill with panoramic views over the vineyard and winery, the cellar door invites tastings for $10, $15, or $30 per person, showcasing the full range. Relax on the deck or inside with a bottle among friends. The menu features 'Food for Wine' grazing: Ortiz sardines or anchovies with lemon and crispbread, charcuterie boards with farmhouse terrine, shaved salami, and peach muscatel. Seasonal dishes highlight estate garden produce, complementing the wines perfectly.

Dining and Atmosphere

Medhurst Cellar Door & More Café serves lunch Friday to Sunday, with indoor and outdoor seating. Casual platters, cheese, and small plates use farm-fresh, local ingredients, accommodating vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets. The tranquil, photogenic setting suits relaxed afternoons, enhanced by occasional live music and events like food and wine dinners.

Visiting Essentials
