Discover more about Urunga Boardwalk

The Urunga Boardwalk, considered one of the best on the east coast, offers a unique experience where the rivers meet the sea. Starting from the town of Urunga, the boardwalk follows the Kalang River, leading to the junction with the Bellinger River and finally extending out to the ocean. The views are spectacular, stretching inland past Urunga, up the river valleys to the Great Dividing Range, and along the coast. Originally built in stages, starting with a simple footbridge in 1902 for the pilot station, the boardwalk has undergone several transformations. The current structure, completed in 2010, is approximately one kilometer long and wheelchair accessible. Interpretive signs along the way share the area's history and natural highlights. As you stroll along the boardwalk, keep an eye out for local wildlife, including pelicans, herons, and ospreys in the Urunga Wetlands. Bottlenose dolphins are often spotted in the estuary, and various crabs and fish can be seen in the shallows. The boardwalk leads to a leash-free, pet-friendly beach area south of the river mouth. The Urunga Wetlands, located nearby, also feature a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk loop, offering a chance to see diverse birdlife.
