Car
If you're traveling by car, start your journey from Alice Springs, which is approximately 130 km (about 2 hours) south of Mount Sonder Lookout. Get on the Stuart Highway/A87 from Alice Springs and head north. After about 100 km, take the exit toward Namatjira Drive. Follow Namatjira Drive for about 30 km until you reach the Mount Sonder Lookout parking area. Make sure to have a GPS or a map app handy, as the roads can be remote and signage may be limited. There is no fee for parking at the lookout.
Public Transportation
If you prefer to use public transportation, you can take a bus service from Alice Springs to Kings Canyon or Glen Helen, which typically operates a few times a week. From Glen Helen, you will need to arrange for a taxi or a shuttle service to take you the remaining 20 km to Mount Sonder Lookout. Be aware that public transport schedules can be sparse, so check the times in advance and plan accordingly. Additionally, expect to pay for the bus fare, which can vary based on the service provider.
Hiking
For the more adventurous, you can hike to Mount Sonder Lookout starting from the Larapinta Trail. The trailhead is located near the Glen Helen Homestead. The hike is approximately 15 km one way and can take 5-7 hours depending on your fitness level. Be sure to start your hike early in the day, carry plenty of water, and be prepared for changing weather conditions. This option is free, but ensure you have proper hiking gear and maps.
