Overview
Kufstein Fortress, or Festung Kufstein, is an iconic landmark that towers over the town of Kufstein in the Austrian Tyrol. With a history dating back to the 13th century, the fortress has been a strategic stronghold, a prison, and now a popular tourist destination.Originally built as a protective castle, it underwent significant expansion, particularly in the 16th century under Emperor Maximilian I, who transformed it into an imposing bastion. Throughout the centuries, the fortress was fiercely contested between Bavaria and Tyrol, witnessing numerous sieges and changes in ownership. Today, it stands as a testament to the region's turbulent past, offering visitors a chance to explore its well-preserved structures and delve into its rich history.Key attractions within the fortress include the Heroes' Organ (Heldenorgel), the world's largest open-air organ with 4,307 pipes, built to commemorate the fallen of both World Wars. Its music can be heard throughout the city at noon. Visitors can also explore the local museum, housed in the Citizens' Tower, which showcases the history of the region. The former prison tower in the Imperial Tower and the underground rock passage offer glimpses into the fortress's darker past. The fortress also features a herb garden and hosts special exhibitions throughout the year. The fortress is open daily, and admission includes a ride on the panorama cable car, access to the museums and exhibitions, and the audio guide app.
