Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, head towards the town of Dürnstein, which is located in the Wachau Valley. From major cities like Vienna or Linz, take the A1 motorway towards St. Pölten, then switch to the S33 towards Krems. From Krems, follow the B3 road along the Danube, which will take you directly to Dürnstein. Parking is available near the castle, but be prepared for a short walk up the hill to the castle entrance.

• Train

  For those using public transportation, take a train from Vienna to Krems on the Westbahn line. The journey takes about 1 hour. Once you arrive in Krems, transfer to the local bus (Bus 720) that goes to Dürnstein. The bus ride takes approximately 20 minutes. The bus will drop you off near the town, from where you can walk to the castle. Keep in mind that a train ticket from Vienna to Krems costs around €15-€20, and the bus may charge a small fare (around €3).

• Bicycle

  For an adventurous option, consider cycling to Dürnstein. The Danube Cycle Path is well-marked and follows the river, providing scenic views of the Wachau Valley. You can rent a bicycle in Krems if needed. After cycling approximately 5 km from Krems, you will reach Dürnstein. There are bike racks available near the castle for you to secure your bike while you explore.

• Walking

  If you are already in Dürnstein town, walking to the castle is a delightful option. From the center of town, follow the signs leading to the castle. The path is steep and may take around 20-30 minutes to walk, but the views along the way are stunning. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially during the warmer months.
