Getting there

Public Transport

From Vienna, take a train from Hauptbahnhof to Wiener Neustadt, then transfer to a regional train to Puchberg am Schneeberg. From Puchberg station, the Schneebergbahn is adjacent. The train journey from Vienna to Puchberg takes approximately 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes. A standard single train fare from Vienna to Wiener Neustadt costs approximately €15-25. The regional train from Wiener Neustadt to Puchberg am Schneeberg is about €5-10. The Schneebergbahn ticket to Hochschneeberg (summit station) ranges from €42-52 for an adult round trip.

Driving

From Vienna, take the A2 towards Graz and exit at Wiener Neustadt-West. Follow the B26 to Puchberg am Schneeberg. In Puchberg, turn right into Bahnstraße to reach Bahnhofplatz 1, the location of the Schneebergbahn. Parking is available in Puchberg. Follow the parking guidance system. Parking fees around €6 per day. Charging stations for electric cars are available at parking lot 2.

Rising to 2,076 meters (6,811 ft), Schneeberg is the highest mountain in Lower Austria and the easternmost and northernmost peak in the Alps exceeding 2,000 meters. This impressive limestone massif, part of the Vienna Alps, presents steep slopes and panoramic vistas. On clear days, it's visible from Vienna, Bratislava, and even Brno.Since 1897, the Schneeberg Railway has provided an easy ascent. The cog railway takes visitors to Austria's highest train station at 1,795 meters, where hiking trails to the summit begin. Choose between the nostalgic steam train (90-minute ride) or the modern Salamander locomotive (40 minutes).At the mountain station, explore the TOP ART 1800 gallery, Austria's highest-elevation gallery. A short walk leads to the Elisabeth Church, built in memory of Empress Sissi. Enjoy the views from the Panorama Paradise trail.Schneeberg offers varied hiking trails for all skill levels. Stop at the Baumgartner station for Schneeberg Buchteln, a local pastry. The mountain also offers winter activities like skiing and snowboarding. Cozy mountain lodges provide cuisine and relaxation.
