Discover more about Tratzberg Castle

Tratzberg Castle, a striking example of Renaissance architecture, sits majestically on a steep ridge overlooking Jenbach in the Tyrol region of Austria. First documented in the 13th century, it initially served as a border fortress against Bavaria. After being destroyed by fire in 1492, Emperor Maximilian I exchanged the ruins with the Tänzl brothers, wealthy silver mine owners, who rebuilt it starting in 1500. The castle's ownership changed hands several times over the centuries, with notable periods under the Ilsung and Fugger families, who contributed to its expansion and artistic embellishments. The Enzenberg family acquired the castle in 1847 and still owns and resides there today, ensuring its preservation as one of Austria's best-maintained castles. Visitors can explore the castle's opulent interiors through guided tours, available in multiple languages, with options for both adults and children. The tours feature audio guides that recount the castle's history and showcase its highlights, including the Habsburg Hall, armory, and original furnishings from the Renaissance period. A virtual reality tour offers an immersive experience, transporting visitors back to 1492 to witness the castle's transformation.
