Discover more about Salzburg Residence

The Salzburg Residence, also known as the Alte Residenz or Old Residence, stands proudly at Domplatz and Residenzplatz in Salzburg's historic center. For centuries, this palace was the heart of Salzburg's spiritual and secular power, serving as the residence and representative building of the Prince-Archbishops.The earliest documented reference to the bishop's palace dates back to around 1120. Construction began under Archbishop Conrad I, who moved his residence from St Peter's Abbey to its current location near Salzburg Cathedral. The palace saw numerous changes and expansions over the centuries, with Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau significantly remodeling it in the late Renaissance style in the 16th century. Each subsequent archbishop left their mark, contributing to the palace's magnificent design. After Salzburg's secularization in 1803, the Residenz became a residence for the Austrian imperial dynasty. Following World War I, the Residenzgalerie art gallery was established in 1923 to replace the prince-archbishops' art collection that was lost during the Napoleonic Wars. The Salzburg Residence boasts over 180 rooms and three spacious courtyards. Visitors can explore the lavishly furnished state rooms, including the Carabinierisaal (Carabinieri Hall), Rittersaal (Knight's Room), and Audienzsaal (Audience Room). The Residenz Gallery displays a collection of European paintings from the 16th to 19th centuries. Today, the Salzburg Residence hosts events, conferences, and international congresses.
