Getting There

  • Walking

From the Old Town (Altstadt), walk towards Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz near the Festspielhäuser (Festival Halls). Follow signs for the MönchsbergAufzug (Mönchsberg Lift). Instead of taking the lift, continue along Gstättengasse, a pedestrian street winding uphill. The walk takes approximately 15-20 minutes with scenic views. Sky Space is on your left, next to the Museum der Moderne.

  • Public Transport

The closest bus stops are 'MönchsbergAufzug' and 'F. -Hanusch-Platz'. Bus lines 1, 8, 23, 24, 27, and 28 serve these stops. From 'MönchsbergAufzug', walk uphill along Gstättengasse. From 'F. -Hanusch-Platz', take the pedestrian underpass to the base of Mönchsberg and walk up Gstättengasse. A single ride within Salzburg's core zone costs €2.40.

  • Taxi/Ride-Share

Request a taxi or ride-share to the Museum der Moderne Salzburg (Mönchsberg 32). Vehicles cannot drive directly to Sky Space due to pedestrian zones and the mountain's terrain. The taxi will likely drop you off at F. -Hanusch-Platz or near the Mönchsberg Lift. From there, walk 5-10 minutes uphill along Gstättengasse to reach Sky Space. A short taxi ride from the city center costs approximately €10-€15.

Discover more about Sky Space

Sky Space, officially titled "Blue Pearl – Skyspace," is a captivating art installation created by James Turrell, celebrated for his work with light and space. Located on the Mönchsberg, it's an integral part of Salzburg's Walk of Modern Art. The deliberate placement near the Museum der Moderne encourages reflection on perception and reality. The structure, an elliptical cylinder measuring 9.20 x 7.20 x 8.36 meters, is built from the same conglomerate rock as the Mönchsberg, blending seamlessly with its environment. Its open roof frames the sky, turning it into a dynamic canvas of light and color. Inside, the minimalist space with seating along the walls invites visitors to sit and observe. The experience is particularly captivating at dawn and dusk when the changing sunlight paints the sky with vibrant colors. Concealed fluorescent lamps subtly shift the color of the artificial light, creating a trompe-l'oeil effect that blurs the boundaries between natural and artificial light. Sky Space offers a serene escape and a unique connection with the sky.
