Discover more about Kapitelschwemme

The Kapitelschwemme, a Baroque horse well, graces Kapitelplatz in Salzburg's Old Town, adjacent to the Salzburg Cathedral. This square is one of the largest Baroque squares in Salzburg. Constructed in 1732 under Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian, the fountain once served as a watering place for horses. The fountain's design reflects the artistic grandeur of the 18th century. A statue of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, stands at the center, mounted on a seahorse. Neptune holds a trident and wears a regal crown, symbolizing his dominion over water. Flanking Neptune are two Triton figures blowing into conch shells, which predate the rest of the artwork, having been created in 1690. The artwork, excluding the Tritons, was crafted by Josef Anton Pfaffinger, based on designs by Franz Anton Danreiter. The plate above Neptune displays a vase carried by angels, along with the coat of arms of Archbishop Leopold von Firmian, and a Latin inscription stating "LeopoLDVs prInCeps Me eXtrVXIt" (“I was built by Prince Leopold”), which also represents the year of construction, 1732, in Roman numerals. While the Kapitelschwemme no longer serves its original function, it remains a historical landmark. Visitors can admire its intricate details and craftsmanship. The square is a gathering place for locals and tourists and hosts events, including open-air markets and cultural performances.
