Discover more about Jungfernsprung

Jungfernsprung is a prominent rock spur in the western Graz Uplands, offering a captivating blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and local legend. Situated a short distance from the ruins of Gösting Castle, this dolomite formation provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Mur Valley and the city of Graz, making it a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The name "Jungfernsprung," meaning "Maiden's Leap," is derived from a tragic legend. According to the tale, Anna von Gösting, a young maiden heartbroken by the loss of her lover in a duel, leapt to her death from this very spot. Her despair immortalized the location, transforming it into a poignant reminder of love and loss. While the historical accuracy of the legend is debated, it adds a layer of mystique and romance to the site, enhancing its appeal. Geologically, Jungfernsprung is composed of light and dark gray dolomites dating back to the Lower Devonian period. The rocky ridge extends across the northern slope of the Gösting ruin mountain, offering a commanding view from its highest point, which reaches an elevation of 550 meters above sea level. The site's geological significance contributes to its designation as a potential natural monument by the state of Styria. The area surrounding Jungfernsprung is a haven for diverse flora and fauna. The site is home to a variety of plant species, including the protected auricula, for which a designated protected landscape area was established in 1956. The rock formation and the entire ruin mountain are part of the Western Mountain and Hill Country of Graz landscape protection area, ensuring the preservation of its natural beauty. The presence of the woodland saber-toothed cricket adds to the area's faunal significance. Historically, the nearby Gösting Castle played a crucial role in the defense of Graz. Built in the 11th century, the castle was expanded over the centuries to serve as a fortress against invading forces. Jungfernsprung, with its strategic vantage point, likely served as an observation post, providing early warning of approaching enemies.
