    Discover more about Schlossberg Graz

Rising 473 meters above sea level, the Schlossberg is a tree-clad hill in the center of Graz that was once a mighty fortress. Its history dates back to the 10th century, with significant expansions in the 16th century. Although never conquered, the fortress was largely demolished by Napoleonic forces in the early 19th century. However, the Uhrturm (Clock Tower) and Glockenturm (Bell Tower) were spared thanks to the citizens of Graz, who ransomed them.Today, the Schlossberg is a public park offering stunning views and several attractions. The Uhrturm, with its unusual reversed hands (the larger hand indicates hours), is a symbol of Graz. The Glockenturm houses Liesl, the heaviest bell in the city. Visitors can explore the Kasemattenbühne, an open-air stage in the ruins of a bastion, and wander through tunnels built during World War II.There are multiple ways to ascend the Schlossberg. The Schlossbergbahn funicular provides a scenic ride, while the Schlossberglift offers a quick vertical ascent. For those seeking exercise, paths and stairs lead up the hill. Once at the top, cafes and restaurants offer refreshment with a view. The Graz Museum Schlossberg provides historical context, and the Chinese Pavilion offers a tranquil resting spot.
