Discover more about Thomaskapelle

Perched atop the Schlossberg, the evocative remains of the Thomaskapelle offer a poignant reminder of Graz's rich medieval history. While only the foundation walls are visible today, these stones whisper stories of a once-grand chapel. First documented in 1271, archaeological evidence suggests it may have been built even earlier, possibly in the 12th century. This round, Romanesque structure with its semi-circular apse facing east, was more than a simple place of prayer. It served as a vital spiritual center for the garrison stationed at the Schlossberg fortress and for prisoners held within its walls. Historical accounts describe a lavishly decorated interior with vibrant frescoes, intricate carvings, and stained-glass windows. During the Reformation in the 16th century, the chapel served as a shared worship space for both Catholics and Protestants. In 1810, due to structural damage, the chapel was torn down, leaving only the foundation. Today, the altar panel of the Thomaskapelle is exhibited in the Graz Museum Schlossberg. Visitors can explore the Schlossberg's tunnel system, created during World War II to protect civilians from aerial bombing. The Thomaskapelle is a portal to the past, connecting visitors with the spirit of medieval Graz. Nearby attractions include the iconic Clock Tower (Uhrturm), offering breathtaking city views, and the Schlossbergbahn funicular.
