The Lindwurmbrunnen, located in the heart of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee on Neuer Platz, stands as the city's most iconic landmark. Commissioned in 1583, the fountain features a sculpture of a Lindwurm, a dragon-like creature from local legends, serving as the heraldic animal of the city. The monument was likely crafted by an anonymous master, carved from a single block of chlorite slate sourced from Kreuzbergl.The Lindwurm is depicted with its mouth wide open and wings set back, showcasing a threatening nature in a style that blends Mannerist and Romanesque elements. The completed sculpture was transported to Neuer Platz in 1593 by 300 young men dressed in white. The fountain was added later in 1624, at which point the statue was reoriented to face east-west. In 1636, a statue of Hercules, created by Michael Hönel, was added to the ensemble, commemorating the legend of the Lindwurm's defeat.In 1972, the Lindwurmbrunnen was moved to its current location during the construction of an underground parking garage. The fountain has undergone several renovations, including comprehensive restoration work from 1997 to 2000 and partial renovations in 2013 and 2017. Today, the Lindwurmbrunnen attracts visitors with its artistic design and historical significance, offering a glimpse into Klagenfurt's cultural heritage.

Walking
The Lindwurmbrunnen is located in the center of Neuer Platz, making it easily accessible on foot from most central locations in Klagenfurt. From the Klagenfurt Hauptbahnhof (main train station), head south on Bahnhofstraße for about 600 meters. Turn left onto St. Veiter Straße and walk for approximately 500 meters until you reach Neuer Platz. The fountain will be directly in front of you. Walking from the Landhaus, head east on Landhausstraße towards the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall). Continue straight until you reach Neuer Platz.
