Arik-Brauer-Haus: A Whimsical Viennese Masterpiece

The Arik-Brauer-Haus, situated on Gumpendorfer Straße, is more than just a residential building; it's a testament to the artistic vision of Arik Brauer. Completed in 1994, the building stands as a unique example of Fantastic Realism brought to life in architecture. Brauer, in collaboration with architect Peter Pelikan, transformed an ordinary structure into a vibrant work of art. The building's facade is adorned with large, colorful ceramic murals that reflect Brauer's fascination with nature, harmony, and environmental themes. These murals, composed of countless individual tiles, create a mesmerizing tapestry of colors and shapes. The artistic touches extend beyond the facade, with rooftop gardens adding greenery to the urban landscape. The interior courtyard features a pond and small animal enclosures, further enhancing the building's connection to nature. Even the stairwell windows are decorated with reverse glass paintings, showcasing Brauer's attention to detail. Arik Brauer (1929-2021) was a multifaceted artist, known as a painter, printmaker, singer-songwriter, stage designer, and architect. He was a co-founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. His architectural projects, including the Arik-Brauer-Haus, are characterized by their whimsical designs, vibrant colors, and integration of art and nature. The Arik-Brauer-Haus comprises 33 residential units and three commercial spaces. The design aimed to integrate green spaces into a densely populated urban area.
