Perched on a steep rock at approximately 460 meters above sea level, the castle was first documented in 1188. It is believed that Heinrich von Wildegg constructed the castle around 1133, as part of a protective belt of fortresses against invaders from the East. Throughout the centuries, Burg Wildegg has passed through various hands, including the Altenburger family and the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz. In 1986, it became the property of the Catholic Youth Group of the Archdiocese of Vienna. The castle has undergone several renovations and expansions, evolving into its present size under the stewardship of the Abbey. Today, Burg Wildegg serves as a hostel and hiking area, offering visitors a unique opportunity to stay within the walls of a medieval castle. The surrounding area provides scenic hiking trails through the Wienerwald, allowing guests to explore the natural beauty of the region.
