Walking

Burgruine Mödling, also known as Burg Mödling, is a prominent ruin offering a blend of history and natural beauty. The castle's origins trace back to at least 1002, with significant construction occurring in the latter half of the 12th century. Initially intended as a residence for Theodora, niece of Byzantine Emperor Manuel I, it became the seat of a Babenberg family branch in 1177. The castle was one of the largest fortifications in Austria during the 12th century, measuring 175 x 80 meters. Throughout its history, Burgruine Mödling was more focused on the arts than military conflicts, hosting Minnesänger and other artists. The chapel, dedicated to St. Pancras, highlights its cultural and religious importance. The castle's strategic location made it easy to spot approaching dangers from the east. The castle was destroyed in 1529 during the first Turkish siege of Vienna and was completely burned down in 1556 due to a lightning strike. Although Fürst Johann I von Liechtenstein restored parts of the structure in the romantic style, it was damaged again after the revolution in 1848. The town of Mödling later renovated the site, adding explanatory panels to create an informative walking tour. Today, Burgruine Mödling is a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the ruins, enjoy panoramic views of Mödling and the Husarentempel, and delve into the surrounding Föhrenberge Nature Park.
