Discover more about Planetenwanderweg Wien - SATURN

The Planetenwanderweg Wien, or Vienna Planet Path, offers a unique and educational hiking experience, allowing visitors to traverse a scaled-down version of our solar system. Located in Vienna's 23rd district, Liesing, the path runs for 6 kilometers along the outer wall of the Lainzer Tiergarten, a large wildlife preserve. This carefully designed trail presents the planets, including the sun, in a scale of 1:1 billion, providing a tangible sense of the immense distances involved in space. The path begins at the end of Wittgensteinstraße, where a large representation of the sun marks the start of the solar system. As you walk along the path, you'll encounter each planet at its scaled distance from the sun, with informational panels providing details about its size, composition, and orbital characteristics. The Saturn station, specifically, allows you to visualize this gas giant and its prominent ring system within the context of the entire solar system. The Planetenwanderweg was established in 2006 with the support of the MA 49-Forstamt and Landwirtschaftsbetrieb der Stadt Wien, with the panels and content provided by the Astronomisches Büro in Wien. The path serves as a complement to the nearby Sterngarten Georgenberg, an open-air planetarium, further enhancing Vienna's offerings for astronomy enthusiasts. The trail culminates at the Laaber Tor, marking the edge of the scaled solar system. Informational brochures are available at the start of the path, at the Gütenbachtor in the middle, and at the end near Laaber Tor.
