    Discover more about Freyung

Freyung, a charming triangular square in Vienna's first district (Innere Stadt), offers a captivating glimpse into the city's rich history. The square's name, derived from the German word "frey" meaning "free," reflects its past as a sanctuary. In the 12th century, Duke Henry II invited Irish monks to establish the Schottenstift monastery, granting it immunity from ducal authority and the right to protect fugitives. This led to the square being known as "Bei den Schotten" (at the Scots). Over the centuries, Freyung evolved into a bustling marketplace, hosting various street artists and entertainers. Today, it continues this tradition with weekly farmers' markets and seasonal events like the Altwiener Christkindlmarkt (Old Viennese Christmas Market). The square is framed by magnificent palaces, including Palais Harrach, Palais Kinsky, and Palais Ferstel, showcasing Vienna's architectural grandeur. The Freyung Passage, located within Palais Ferstel, is an upscale arcade featuring luxury shops and a beautiful fountain. At the center of Freyung stands the Austriabrunnen (Austria Fountain), designed by Ludwig Schwanthaler and erected in 1846. The fountain's statues allegorically represent the four main rivers of the Habsburg Empire: the Elbe, Vistula, Danube, and Po. A visit to Freyung offers a delightful immersion into Vienna's past and present, surrounded by historical landmarks and a vibrant atmosphere.
