Schloss Ebenthal: A Renaissance Jewel in Carinthia
Discover Schloss Ebenthal, a breathtaking Renaissance castle with Baroque flair, offering a glimpse into Austria's captivating history and culture.
Schloss Ebenthal, located in Ebenthal in Kärnten, stands as a testament to Austria's rich architectural and cultural heritage. Constructed in 1566 by Christoph von Neuhaus, the castle's ownership was confirmed by Archduke Karl II in 1567. In the 17th century, it was expanded with an additional floor and the addition of two turrets. The Counts of Goëss, who acquired the property in 1704, further renovated the castle in the 18th century, adding Baroque elements to its Renaissance core. The castle itself is a three-story building with eleven window axes, surrounded by a large park that was established in the 18th century. The facade features a pilaster structure, with corner projections and a central gable adorned with coats of arms on the west front, and a classicist portico with balustrade on the east front. Inside, the highlight is the festival hall on the second floor, featuring a barrel vault with illusionistic paintings by Josef Ferdinand Fromiller from 1748. Today, Schloss Ebenthal remains in the possession of the Goëss family, housing an extensive family library. While the park is generally private, it is accessible through guided tours offered several times a year. The castle also serves as a venue for events, including weddings, and concerts.
