Discover more about Englischer Garten

The Englischer Garten, or English Garden, offers a tranquil escape within the larger Blumengärten Hirschstetten in Vienna's 22nd district, Donaustadt. This themed garden, brought to life with the support of the British Embassy, provides a meticulously crafted experience of a traditional English garden, showcasing a variety of roses and companion plants in a carefully designed landscape. The Englischer Garten is thoughtfully divided into three distinct sections: an entrance area, a central section, and a rear area. Each section is separated by hedges and groupings of trees, creating individual garden rooms, each with its own unique character and charm. This division allows visitors to experience different facets of English garden design as they stroll through the space. The entrance and rear areas are designed to evoke the feeling of a traditional English cottage garden. Here, the English rose takes center stage, surrounded by a supporting cast of perennials and herbaceous plants, all set against a backdrop of lush green hedges. This creates a layered effect, drawing the eye and inviting exploration. Popular companion plants in the Englischer Garten include the upright, blue-violet ornamental sage, fragrant lavender, and catmint. Woolly thyme, with its silky, silvery foliage, and purple-pink cornflowers also add to the visual tapestry. These plants were carefully selected not only for their beauty but also for their ability to complement the roses and create a harmonious overall effect. Grasses also play an important role in the design, their varied growth habits and diverse leaf colors providing texture and contrast. In spring, the round flowerheads of ornamental onions add bold splashes of color to the perennial beds, signaling the start of the growing season. The central section of the Englischer Garten features a small biotope, a pond covered with water lilies, as the focal point. This tranquil water feature is surrounded by an English lawn. It is bordered at the edges with fragrant climbing roses and flowering perennials. Passages made of airy pergolas lead east and west into the other two parts of the garden, connecting the three areas. A loose row of trees borders the English Garden on the northern side.
