Located in the Schönbrunn Palace Park, the Desert House (Wüstenhaus) provides an immersive experience of desert life. Originally built in 1904 by Emperor Franz Joseph I to house his collection of Australian and South African plants, the building was transformed in 2004 into a desert exhibit showcasing the flora and fauna of arid regions around the world. The Desert House takes visitors on a journey through authentic desert landscapes, from the deserts of Central America to those of Madagascar. The route is lined with cacti and succulents, and is home to various desert dwellers, including lizards, tortoises, small mammals, birds, and fish. A highlight is the 70-meter-long maze of glass tubes occupied by a colony of naked mole rats. In 2024, a new paradise was created for the Aldabra giant tortoises.
