    Discover more about Palais Strozzi

Palais Strozzi, situated in Vienna's charming Josefstadt (8th district), offers a glimpse into the city's rich architectural and social history. Countess Maria Katharina Strozzi, née Khevenhüller, commissioned the palace as a modest summer residence between 1699 and 1702. The original structure consisted of a one-story main wing, while the Countess's elaborate garden extended to Piaristengasse. Over the years, the palace has undergone several expansions and renovations under different owners. In 1716, the Archbishop of Valencia, Antonio Francesco Folco de Cardona, acquired the property and added side wings and a forecourt. Later, Empress Maria Theresa gifted the palace to her court chancellor, Johann Graf Chotek. In 1840, the state purchased the building and converted it into a college for women teachers, leading to further expansions and a neoclassical redesign in the late 19th century. Today, Palais Strozzi serves as home to the finance offices for Vienna's VIII, XVI, and XVII districts. While the interior is not generally open to the public, the palace's exterior provides a captivating view of its elegant facade, blending Baroque and 19th-century styles. A walk around the building allows one to appreciate the architectural details and imagine the lives of those who once inhabited its walls. The surrounding Josefstadt district, with its blend of historical charm and modern amenities, adds to the experience, making it a worthwhile detour for those seeking a deeper understanding of Vienna's cultural landscape.
