Discover more about Rathauspark

Rathauspark, situated in Vienna's first district, the Innere Stadt, is a beloved green space offering respite from the city's bustle. Established in 1873, the park replaced a former parade ground and was designed by city gardener Rudolf Siebeck. Emperor Franz Joseph I commissioned the park with the intention of creating a space that contrasted with the surrounding monumental buildings like the Burgtheater, University, Parliament, and City Hall. The park is divided into two nearly symmetrical sections by a wide square leading to the City Hall. This square hosts various events throughout the year, including the Christmas Market, winter ice skating, and summer outdoor film screenings. The park's design features meandering paths, dense groups of trees and shrubs, and numerous monuments to Austrian personalities. Some of the notable statues include those of Theodor Körner, Karl Renner, Josef Popper-Lynkeus, Johann Strauss II, and Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller. A replica of the Rathausmann, the iconic figure atop the City Hall tower, is also on display. Rathauspark provides a setting for relaxation and recreation. Benches line the paths, offering visitors a place to rest and enjoy the surroundings. The park's diverse collection of woody plants, including exotic species like the Japanese pagoda tree and ginkgo, adds to its unique character. The park is also known for the events that take place in the square, such as the Film Festival on Vienna's Rathausplatz, which offers free music films and culinary delights during the summer. In winter, the Christmas Market and Vienna Ice World transform the area into a festive wonderland.
