Palais Ferstel: A Venetian Renaissance Jewel in Vienna

Palais Ferstel, an architectural gem in Vienna's Innere Stadt (Inner City), stands as a testament to the city's rich history and artistic heritage. Constructed in 1860 by Baron Heinrich von Ferstel, this magnificent building initially served as the Austrian National Bank and stock exchange. The main structure occupies the corner of Herrengasse and Strauchgasse, with a grand enclosed passageway leading to Freyung square. This passageway, known as the Ferstel Passage, is home to various shops and cafes.One of Palais Ferstel's most famous features is Café Central, which relocated here in 1876. This coffeehouse has been a cultural hub for over a century, once a meeting place for prominent intellectuals, artists, and politicians like Sigmund Freud and Leon Trotsky. Today, Café Central continues to delight visitors with its culinary offerings and historical ambiance.Palais Ferstel suffered significant damage during World War II, particularly to its facade. However, it was carefully reconstructed, and in 1971, Walter Frodl, the President of the Federal Monuments Office, oversaw its renovation. Between 1975 and 1982, the building was privatized and underwent further restoration. Today, Palais Ferstel is owned by a foundation established in 2015 by Karl Wlaschek.Visitors can explore the Ferstel Passage, admire the architecture, and experience the atmosphere of Café Central. The Donaunixenbrunnen (Danube Mermaid Fountain), designed by Heinrich von Ferstel and completed in 1861, is located in the Basarhof (Bazaar Courtyard) of the Palais Ferstel.
