Michaelertrakt: Imperial Gateway to Vienna's Hofburg

The Michaelertrakt, located on Michaelerplatz, is a striking testament to Vienna's imperial history and architectural grandeur. This prominent wing of the Hofburg Palace serves as a majestic entrance, connecting the outer Michaelerplatz with the inner courtyard. The Michaelertrakt's history dates back to the 18th century when Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach designed it as part of a new Baroque facade for the Hofburg. However, construction was delayed and only completed in the late 19th century by Ferdinand Kirschner.The Michaelertrakt features a semi-circular facade adorned with a 54-meter high dome and sculptures. The Michaelertor, a monumental gate at the center, is flanked by colossal statues of Hercules and elaborate fountains symbolizing Austria's land and sea power. The facade faces St. Michael's Church and the Looshaus, creating a captivating blend of architectural styles.Inside, the Michaelertrakt provides access to some of Vienna's most important sights, including the Sisi Museum, the Imperial Apartments, the Spanish Riding School, and the Silver Chamber. The ceremonial hall boasts 24 Corinthian columns and 26 crystal chandeliers.
