Getting there

Walking

Schillerplatz is located in the Innere Stadt and is easily accessible by foot from many central locations. From Karlsplatz, walk north along the Opernring, then turn left onto Nibelungengasse. Schillerplatz will be on your left. The walk is approximately 5 minutes. No costs involved.

Public Transport

Schillerplatz is well-served by Vienna's public transport system. Take the U1, U2, or U4 subway lines to Karlsplatz station. From there, it's a short walk to Schillerplatz. Alternatively, take tram lines 1, 2, D, or 71 to the Opernring stop, which is also close to the square. A single ticket costs €2.40.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available throughout Vienna. You can hail a taxi on the street or order one through a taxi app. A short taxi ride from a central location such as Stephansplatz to Schillerplatz will likely cost around €15, which is the minimum fare. Be sure the taxi is licensed.

Overview

Schillerplatz, located in Vienna's Innere Stadt (1st district), is a square steeped in artistic and intellectual history. The square is named after Friedrich Schiller, a celebrated German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. Schillerplatz was created in 1878 as part of the urban development that followed the demolition of the city walls in the late 19th century. Before its construction, the area was the site of the Kalkmarkt (lime market). The square was intentionally designed as a green space, named Schillerpark, with a memorial monument to Friedrich Schiller at its center.The focal point of Schillerplatz is the Schiller Monument, which includes allegorical figures representing tragedy, comedy, poetry, and drama. The square is surrounded by significant buildings, including the Academy of Fine Arts. Today, Schillerplatz continues to be a gathering place, close to cafes, museums and other cultural institutions.
