Discover more about Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße

The Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße, or Silvretta High Alpine Road, is more than just a road; it's an experience. Opened to the public in 1954, this scenic route climbs to an elevation of 2,032 meters (6,667 feet) at the Bielerhöhe pass, offering panoramic views of the Silvretta mountain range. The road is a popular destination for motorists, motorcyclists, cyclists, and sightseers, with approximately 400,000 visitors each year. The road's construction was initially driven by the need to transport materials for the construction of hydroelectric power plants in the region. Today, it provides access to the Silvretta Reservoir and surrounding hiking trails. Along the way, travelers can stop at several restaurants and guesthouses, including the architecturally notable Silvretta-Haus. The Silvretta-Hochalpenstraße is typically open from late May or early June to late October or early November, depending on weather conditions. Due to rockfall last summer, construction and safety measures are ongoing, and the road on the Vorarlberg side will be open to traffic from July 19, 2025, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the day and only in dry weather conditions. The Tyrolean side is open without restrictions up to the Vermuntsee.
