Stift Dürnstein, perched on the banks of the Danube in the Wachau Valley, is a celebrated Austrian landmark, famed for its Baroque architecture and the striking blue-and-white tower. Founded in 1410 by Elsbeth of Kuenring as an Augustinian monastery, its history is rich and eventful. The monastery experienced its golden age in the 18th century when it was rebuilt in the Baroque style under architects Jakob Prandtauer and Joseph Munggenast. The abbey church, consecrated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, showcases intricate details and opulent design. The high altar and the fully rotatable tabernacle, adorned with scenes from the life of Jesus, are particularly noteworthy. The blue-and-white tower, designed by Matthias Steinl, has become an iconic symbol of the Wachau Valley. In 1788, Emperor Joseph II dissolved the monastery, and the Augustinian Canons were forced to leave. Today, Stift Dürnstein belongs to the Augustinian Canons of Herzogenburg, who have meticulously renovated the complex. The monastery serves as a venue for cultural events, exhibitions, and guided tours.
