Discover more about BÄRENWALD Arbesbach

BÄRENWALD Arbesbach is a unique animal sanctuary dedicated to providing a safe and natural environment for rescued bears. Established in 1998 by the global animal welfare organization FOUR PAWS, it was the first bear project of its kind. The sanctuary spans over 14,000 square meters of forested land, providing the bears with ample space to roam, forage, and exhibit their natural behaviors. The enclosures are designed to mimic the bears' natural habitat, with ponds for swimming, digging areas, and dens for resting. Visitors can observe the bears from a 500-meter-long, barrier-free circular route, offering a glimpse into their daily lives. Currently, BÄRENWALD Arbesbach is home to four brown bears: Brumca, Erich, Mark, and Felix. Each bear has a unique story, often involving a history of mistreatment or neglect. The sanctuary provides them with the care and rehabilitation they need to recover from their past traumas and live a fulfilling life. The bears are closely monitored by a team of experienced animal caretakers who provide them with a balanced diet, medical care, and enrichment activities to stimulate their minds and bodies. BÄRENWALD Arbesbach is not only a sanctuary for bears but also an educational center. Visitors can learn about bear biology, conservation challenges, and the importance of animal welfare through guided tours, informative exhibits, and engaging educational programs. The sanctuary also works to raise awareness about the plight of bears in captivity and to promote responsible tourism. The sanctuary offers a variety of activities for visitors of all ages, including a playground and a berry show garden. In 2025, BÄRENWALD Arbesbach is undergoing expansion and renovation to improve the visitor experience and provide even better facilities for the bears. The expansion includes new educational stations, a modern exhibition, and an enlarged bear house.
