Brandlhof: A Living Museum of Lower Austrian Culture

Nestled in the idyllic village of Radlbrunn, the Brandlhof stands as a testament to Lower Austria's rich cultural heritage. This meticulously restored farmhouse, with roots stretching back to 1209, has evolved from a humble Meierhof (manor farm) of Lilienfeld Abbey into a thriving center for arts, crafts, and community engagement. Originally documented as a 'Mageria' in a founding charter by Duke Leopold VI, the Brandlhof served as an agricultural outpost. For centuries, the farm played a vital role in the local economy, weathering the storms of history and witnessing the ebb and flow of rural life. In the late 15th century, the property was divided, giving rise to the Brandlhof and the Dienstlhof. The turmoil of the Thirty Years' War took its toll in 1620 when troops under General Dampierre ravaged the entire village. After several changes of ownership, the farm came into the possession of Simon Prändl (Brandl) in 1770 through marriage, whose descendants managed the estate for seven generations, giving it its name. Recognizing the historical and cultural significance of the Brandlhof, the municipality of Ziersdorf acquired the property in 2002, entrusting its revitalization to Volkskultur Niederösterreich. In 2005, the Brandlhof underwent extensive renovations, carefully preserving its original character while transforming it into a modern cultural hub. The inner courtyard, with its residential and commercial spaces, is dominated by a column-supported balcony with a glazed wooden veranda. The former stables of the Meierhof now house an exhibition on the history of the farm and the family, and a tavern has been set up in the former residential wing. The former pigsty was converted into a seminar center. Today, the Brandlhof hosts a diverse program of events throughout the year, celebrating the traditions and artistic expressions of Lower Austria. From traditional music evenings and folk dance workshops to theater performances and literary readings, there's something for everyone to enjoy. The Brandlhof also serves as a venue for craft markets, showcasing the skills of local artisans and providing visitors with the opportunity to purchase unique, handcrafted souvenirs.
