From the Retz train station, it's approximately a 15-20 minute walk. Head north towards the town center, following the signs for Hauptplatz. As you approach the main square, the Sgraffitohaus will be easily visible due to its distinctive facade.
Public Transport

Retz is well-connected by regional trains from Vienna. From Wien Mitte or Floridsdorf, take the regional train directly to Retz. The journey time is approximately 1 hour, with trains departing hourly. From the Retz train station, it is a 15-20 minute walk to the Sgraffitohaus. Alternatively, the Retz guest taxi can be arranged in advance. A single train ticket from Vienna to Retz costs approximately €15-€22.
Parking

Parking around the Hauptplatz is limited to 1.5 hours and requires a parking clock during the week. There are parking options available at Retz Bahnhof. There are also 60 parking spaces on two parking levels below the Althof, with direct lift access. The parking fee is € 8 per day. There is also a parking lot in Katastralgemeinde Retz Stadt.

Built in 1576 by Augustin Resch, a prominent ironmonger and town judge, the house quickly gained fame for its intricate sgraffito decorations. Sgraffito, an Italian technique, involves scratching through layers of colored plaster to reveal contrasting layers beneath, creating detailed designs. The Sgraffitohaus showcases scenes from ancient legends, biblical narratives, and allegorical representations of human life. The facade facing the main square depicts classical mythology, while the side facing Kremserstraße illustrates stories from the Old Testament. This juxtaposition reflects the Renaissance's blending of classical and religious themes. A meticulous restoration in 1928 brought the sgraffito works back to their original splendor. Further renovations in 2021 and 2022 ensured the preservation of its historical substance. Today, the Sgraffitohaus operates as a hotel, blending historical charm with modern comfort.
