Das Sgraffitohaus: A Renaissance Masterpiece

Das Sgraffitohaus, prominently situated on Retz's Hauptplatz, stands as a stunning example of Renaissance artistry and architecture. Built in 1576 by Augustin Resch, a prominent ironmonger and town judge, the house quickly gained fame for its intricate sgraffito decorations. Sgraffito, an Italian technique, involves scratching through layers of colored plaster to reveal contrasting layers beneath, creating detailed designs. The Sgraffitohaus showcases scenes from ancient legends, biblical narratives, and allegorical representations of human life. The facade facing the main square depicts classical mythology, while the side facing Kremserstraße illustrates stories from the Old Testament. This juxtaposition reflects the Renaissance's blending of classical and religious themes. The images and inscriptions on the facade offer insights into the beliefs, values, and artistic sensibilities of the 16th century. Over the centuries, the Sgraffitohaus has undergone several transformations. In 1580, just four years after its construction, the facade was completely covered with sgraffito decorations. Remarkably, the house survived wars and natural disasters. The house was painted over twice, which helped preserve the sgraffito works. A meticulous restoration in 1928 brought the sgraffito works back to their original splendor. Further renovations in 2021 and 2022 ensured the preservation of its historical substance. Today, the Sgraffitohaus operates as a hotel, blending historical charm with modern comfort. Its location on the Hauptplatz places it at the heart of Retz, surrounded by other notable landmarks such as the Retzer Erlebniskeller and the Retzer Windmühle.
