Discover more about Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf

Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf, nestled in the Weinviertel region of Lower Austria, has been owned by the Liechtenstein family since 1436. Originally a Gothic castle, it was transformed into a four-winged water chateau around 1600 by Gundakar of Liechtenstein. Over the centuries, the castle underwent several renovations, reflecting changing architectural styles and the evolving needs of its owners. Today, the castle serves as a cultural and exhibition center, housing a museum dedicated to the history of the Liechtenstein family and their connection to the Weinviertel region. The permanent exhibition chronicles the family's origins, rise to prominence, and close ties to South Moravia (now part of the Czech Republic). The exhibition features artifacts, documents, and interactive displays. A local history collection in the side wing provides insights into the past lifestyles of locals. Exhibits include interesting pieces made from elephant and rhinoceros bones, artifacts from the Neolithic period, farming equipment, historic home furnishings and much more besides. Beyond its historical significance, Liechtenstein Castle Wilfersdorf is also renowned for its wine cellars, which have been producing wines for over 600 years. Visitors can sample the region's finest wines and learn about traditional winemaking practices. The castle also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including the Schlossfestival, featuring open-air operettas. A weekend wine tavern in the centuries-old vaulted cellars of Wilfersdorf Castle is operated in rotation by several local winemaking families. The adjoining vinotheque offers a selection of wines from local wine producers and the Princely Cellars of Liechtenstein.
