Retzer Erlebniskeller: Austria's Largest Historical Wine Cellar

The Retzer Erlebniskeller, or Adventure Cellar of Retz, is a subterranean world of tunnels and chambers located beneath the town of Retz in the Weinviertel region. This extensive network represents Austria's largest historical wine cellar, stretching over 20 kilometers and reaching depths of up to 20 meters. The cellars were created centuries ago, as the winemaking industry flourished and the need for storage became essential. Generations of vintners painstakingly carved out these cellars in the region's sandy soil. The cellars maintain a constant temperature of 10 to 12 degrees Celsius (50 to 54 degrees Fahrenheit) year-round. The consistent climate is ideal for preserving wine.
