    Discover more about Schloss Tratzberg

Nestled on a steep ridge overlooking the Inn Valley, Schloss Tratzberg stands as a magnificent example of Renaissance architecture in the Austrian Alps. The castle's history dates back to the 13th century when it served as a border fortress against Bavaria. In 1492, a devastating fire destroyed the original structure, but Emperor Maximilian I later exchanged the ruins with the Tänzl brothers, wealthy silver mine owners, who rebuilt it in the early 1500s. The Tänzl brothers transformed Tratzberg into a splendid palace, adorning it with intricate marble, wood, and ironwork. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times, with each owner leaving their mark on its design and furnishings. The Fugger family, another wealthy merchant dynasty, expanded and altered Tratzberg in the Renaissance style, adding the striking facade paintings in the inner courtyard. After a period of neglect, the Counts of Enzenberg acquired the castle in 1847 and began a long restoration process. Today, Schloss Tratzberg is one of Austria's best-preserved castles, boasting many of its original furnishings and fittings. Visitors can explore the Habsburg Hall, the Queen's Room, and discover secret doors during guided tours. The castle also offers virtual reality tours, providing a unique and immersive experience of its history. Schloss Tratzberg is open to the public from late March/early April to early November. Guided tours are available in multiple languages and last approximately one hour. To avoid waiting times, especially during peak season, it is recommended to purchase tickets online in advance.
