Getting there

Walking

From the Kufstein city center, the fortress is a short, uphill walk. Follow the signs from Unterer Stadtplatz, located behind St. Vitus parish church and close to the town hall. The walk takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Tickets are available at the main entrance. Consider the panorama funicular railway (Festungsbahn) for an easier ascent.

Public Transport

From Kufstein train station, take the Line 4 bus to Kufstein Oberer Stadtplatz. From there, it is a short walk to the fortress entrance. A single bus fare costs between €1-€3. Alternatively, walk from the train station to the fortress entrance in approximately 20 minutes.

Taxi/Ride-Share

Taxis and ride-sharing services are available in Kufstein. A short ride from the Kufstein train station or city center to the fortress entrance will cost approximately €10-€15. Be aware that during peak season or events, availability may be limited.

Driving

Public parking garages are available in the center of Kufstein. Follow the signs to parking garages such as 'Zentrum' or 'Altstadt Garage'. Parking rates are approximately €1 per hour. From the parking garage, walk to the fortress entrance behind St. Vitus parish church. A 'vignette' tax disc is required when using the motorway and is available at border crossing points and filling stations.

Perched atop a hill overlooking the town of Kufstein, the Kufstein Fortress is a powerful symbol of the region's rich and often turbulent past. First documented in 1205, the fortress has been expanded and modified throughout the centuries, serving as a strategic stronghold and, at times, a prison.Visitors can explore the fortress's various museums, including the local history museum and the museum in the former state prison. The torture chamber offers a glimpse into the darker aspects of the fortress's history. A highlight is the Heldenorgel (Heroes' Organ), the world's largest open-air organ, built as a memorial to the fallen of World War One. Its music can be heard throughout the city at noon daily.The fortress also hosts a variety of events, including concerts, festivals, and the Operetta Summer. The Festungswirtschaft (Fortress Inn) offers traditional meals in a historic setting. With its commanding views, fascinating history, and diverse attractions, Kufstein Fortress offers a memorable experience for visitors of all ages.
