The Lindwurmbrunnen is a captivating historical landmark in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, standing as a testament to the city's rich history and cultural heritage. This iconic fountain, completed in the 16th century, features a striking dragon sculpture steeped in local folklore. The Lindwurm, a dragon-like mythical being, is the heraldic animal of the city. The fountain was commissioned in 1583 by the city. The work was long attributed to Ulrich and Andreas Vogelsang, but it probably comes from an anonymous master. The sculpture is made from chlorite slate from near Kreuzbergl. The monumental sculpture shows the animal with its mouth open, water flowing from it, and its wings set. In 1636, a statue of Hercules was added to the fountain ensemble. In 1972, the Lindwurmbrunnen was moved to its current location on Neuer Platz during the construction of an underground parking garage. From 1997 to 2000, a comprehensive restoration of the Lindwurm and Hercules figure was undertaken in Vienna. The Klagenfurt Lindwurm's head is said to be modeled after the skull of a woolly rhinoceros discovered in a nearby quarry in 1335.
