Discover more about Brunnen

The Brunnen am Stadtplatz, nestled in the very heart of Zell am See, is a captivating landmark that embodies the town's rich history and vibrant community spirit. More than just a decorative fountain, it serves as a central gathering place, a historical marker, and a picturesque scene against the backdrop of the Austrian Alps. The fountain's origins trace back centuries, though the current structure was erected in 1954, replacing an earlier version that had been removed in 1894 after the construction of a modern water supply system. The original fountain, which had evolved from a simple wooden structure to one adorned with a statue of the Virgin Mary around 1840, had become obsolete. However, the townspeople, recognizing the square's importance as a social hub, rebuilt the fountain through local donations, demonstrating their commitment to preserving their heritage. The Stadtplatz itself has been the heart of Zell am See for centuries. Its triangular shape has remained unchanged, witnessing countless historical events and transformations. Once, a small stream flowed across the square, and a prominent linden tree stood alongside the original fountain. Landscape painters in the 19th century immortalized the square and its features, providing valuable insights into its past appearance. Today, the Brunnen am Stadtplatz is adorned with panels that depict key moments in Zell am See's history, offering visitors a glimpse into the town's evolution. The surrounding square is a pedestrian zone, creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Cafes, restaurants, and shops line the square, making it a perfect place to relax and soak in the alpine atmosphere.
