Discover more about Sigmund Thun Klamm Wasserfall

The Sigmund Thun Gorge, or Sigmund Thun-Klamm, is a stunning natural attraction located near Kaprun in the Salzburg region of Austria. Over thousands of years, the Kapruner Ache river, fed by melting glaciers, has carved a 320-meter-long and up to 32-meter-deep gorge through the rock. In 1893, the gorge was opened to the public thanks to the efforts of Nikolaus Gassner, a local tourism pioneer. He constructed wooden pathways, allowing visitors to explore the natural wonder. The gorge is named after Sigmund Earl of Thun, who was impressed by its beauty. Access was restricted in 1938 due to the construction of a nearby hydroelectric power plant but was reopened in 1992. Today, visitors can walk along the well-maintained wooden walkways and bridges that wind through the narrow passages above the rushing water. The path leads to the Klammsee, an artificial lake. The gorge is particularly enchanting at night during the summer months when special light shows illuminate the rocks and water.
