Brixner Dom: A Baroque Masterpiece

The Brixner Dom, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and Saint Cassian, stands as the most important religious building in Brixen. Its history stretches back to 980 AD when the original Ottonian structure was built. A major fire in 1174 led to a Romanesque redesign, featuring a three-aisled nave and two prominent facade towers.The cathedral's current Baroque appearance is the result of an extensive reconstruction between 1745 and 1754. This transformation incorporated 33 types of marble and magnificent frescoes by Paul Troger, including the "Adoration of the Lamb". The high altar, crafted by Theodor Benedetti, is a highlight of Tyrolean Baroque art.Inside, visitors can admire the grand nave, graceful arches, and stunning frescoes and paintings. The cathedral also houses several altars and chapels adorned with religious artworks, sculptures, and relics. The impressive organ, with its 3,335 pipes and 84 stops, adds to the cathedral's artistic and spiritual ambiance. South of the cathedral, the cloister showcases Romanesque and Gothic frescoes, adding another layer to the site's historical and artistic significance.Brixen itself provides a charming backdrop to the Dom, with quaint shops, cafes, and local markets surrounding the cathedral.
