Getting There

  • Car

    To reach the Olpererhütte trailhead by car, navigate to the Schlegeis Reservoir (Schlegeisspeicher). From Mayrhofen, take the Alpenstrasse Schlegeis Road (Schlegeis Alpine Road). Be prepared for a scenic, but narrow, mountain road with one-way tunnels controlled by traffic lights. A toll of €17 per car is charged for access to the road. Parking is free at the reservoir. Arrive early, especially on sunny summer weekends, to secure a parking spot.

  • Public Transport

    To reach the Olpererhütte using public transport, take bus 4102 from Mayrhofen to the Schlegeisspeicher Dam. The bus journey takes approximately 40 minutes. In 2025, a single ticket costs €7.70 from Mayrhofen to Schlegeis Stausee, plus a €3.60 toll per person. From Innsbruck, take a train to Jenbach, then another train or bus to Mayrhofen. Bus 4102 connects Mayrhofen, Ginzling and Schlegeisspeicher Dam.

  • Walking

    From the Schlegeis Reservoir parking area, the Olpererhütte trailhead is a short walk away. Follow the yellow hiking signs towards Olpererhütte (trail #502). The hike is approximately 3 km (1.9 miles) with an elevation gain of 600 meters (1,970 feet) and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The trail is rocky and steep in parts.

Sharing its name with the imposing Olperer mountain, this hut has been a haven for climbers and hikers since 1881. Originally built by the Prague Division of the German-Austrian Alpine Club, the hut has evolved from a basic shelter to a modern mountain hut with comfortable rooms and a restaurant. Today, the Olpererhütte is best known for its panoramic views of the Schlegeis Reservoir (Schlegeis Stausee) and a nearby suspension bridge that has become an Instagram sensation. The bridge provides an incredible vantage point and an opportunity to capture stunning photos with the emerald green dam and surrounding peaks as a backdrop. The hut is a popular stop along several long-distance hiking trails, including the Berlin High Trail, the Peter Habeler Route, and the Munich-Venice Dream Trail. The dedicated team running the hut serves delicious Austrian meals and drinks, allowing visitors to relax and refuel while taking in the breathtaking scenery. The hut is generally open from early June to early October.
